The breadth of activities at a world-class
research institution require a variety of facilities located throughout the
entire community.
While some facilities serve the general public, University employees
enjoy convenient access.
- At the UI Hospitals and Clinics, staff members and their families have ready access to multidisciplinary teams of caring, compassionate specialists,
providing the most advanced care available. Services include an
on-site pharmacy, patient representatives, interpreter services, and
opportunities to participate in medical research.
- The College of Dentistry offers 11 specialty clinics and outreach programs and its national award-winning Geriatric Mobile Dental Unit, focusing on
children, special needs patients, and seniors. Other services include
an on-site pharmacy, access to patient representatives, interpreter
services, and opportunities to participate in dental research.
- Natural History, Art, Medical, Old Capitol, Historical, and Athletic Museums are available for your enjoyment.
- Hancher Auditorium and University Theatres host world-class entertainment, including national and international professional artists, and performances by the Departments of Theatre Arts, Music, and Dance.
- The Iowa Memorial Union offers guest and event services to staff members for personal and professional enjoyment, including reservation of:

- The University has two, 24-hour Iowa Public Radio member stations carrying a wide selection of nationally syndicated and local programming. KSUIFM
91.7 features classical and arts programs. WUI-AM 910 offers
information and talk, and National Public Radio news.
- Recreational Services and its Fitness Facilities provide three convenient on-campus locations for competitive or informal recreation and exercise activities. UI staff members can enjoy activities ranging from aikido and swimming to wildlife camp and weightlifting.
- The Macbride Nature Recreation Area is a 485-acre tract of land leased by the University of Iowa from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, under the direction of the Division of Recreational Services. Many of the environmental education youth programs are located here. It includes a raptor education and rehabilitation center, picnicking, camping, hiking, and cross-country
skiing. It is also the home of the University of Iowa Sailing Club.
- The Touch the Earth program (returning through Recreation Services summer/fall 2006) offers outdoor courses and rental of equipment such as tents
and kayaks.
- Arts Share offers communities around the state a variety of opportunities, including interactive performances, workshops, readings, residencies, and master classes.
- Lunch with the Chefs features an entertaining themed lunch menu by the IMU’s awardwinning chefs one Thursday every month during the academic year.
- Five on-campus daycares help provide childcare for the children of faculty, staff, and students
- Walking, bicycling and athletic trails weave throughout the campus and community.
- Scenic Finkbine Golf Course provides championship-level recreation at a discount for staff members.
- Frisbee golf, picnic areas, and fishing ponds can all be enjoyed at the Oakdale campus.
- The UI Arboretum is a small, yet beautiful and diverse collection of species nestled along the banks of the Iowa River, adjacent to North Hall.
- The University State Hygienic Laboratory (UHL), located on the Oakdale Campus, is the State of Iowa’s public health and environmental laboratory. It is a
resource for Iowa citizens and agencies alike. The lab provides a wide
range of services such as home, workplace, and environmental air
quality testing, water quality information and testing kits, and rapid response
information in the event of epidemic disease.
