- Learning & Development provides extensive programming to promote personal and
professional development, including leadership and management
series and seminars, performance management coaching, employee
orientation, award programs, and online learning.
- Award programs(*Dependent on employment classification):
- The Tuition Assistance Program provides staff members tuition at an accredited
institution for one course, up to four hours per semester.
- The Mary Jo Small Award Program supports enrollment in professional
conferences and workshops in a staff member’s field of expertise.
- The Professional Internship Program allows staff members to experience working
in another UI department, or to volunteer to be a cooperating intern
supervisor.
- Learning Online with SkillSoft and Books 24x7 is an online learning program available
to faculty, staff, and students at no charge. It provides online
access to more than 2,200 courses and 7,000 books on a variety of
workplace topics and IT skills. Some coursework prepares individuals
for specialized certifications such as project management (PMI)
and Human Resources Certification (PHR, SPHR). Continuing
education credits are also available. Learning Online allows you to
personalize a curriculum, selecting from courses specific to your work
needs or personal interests.
- The Division of Continuing Education delivers credit and not-for-credit courses on and
off campus through a variety of formats serving non-traditional, part-time,
and regularly enrolled students.
- UI Career Development Advising is a free and confidential service to help UI employees
work toward their personal career development goals within The
University of Iowa. One-on-one consultation helps employees
identify short and long term goals, develop strategies and benchmarks
to achieve these goals, and address resume design, cover letters, and
interviewing skills and techniques to facilitate the advancement of
their University career.
- Leadership coaching is a service available from Organizational Effectiveness for UI
leaders. Individual coaching contracts are based upon the creation of
a powerful partnership between the coach, client, and supervisor, and
are developmental, not evaluative in nature. This partnership supports
clients and their supervisory staff to maximize their potential and
achieve work-related outcomes which lead to organizational success.
- The University Lecture Series features prominent national and international leaders
in a forum that facilitates audience participation and encourages an
exchange of ideas and opinions.
- The Presidential Lecture Series provides an opportunity to hear distinguished
members of the faculty present significant aspects of their work.
- The Saturday Scholars program is a free lecture series presented each fall by members
of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences on their latest teaching and
research innovations. Topics are as broad ranging as the college itself.
- The Geneva Lecture Series provides discussions with distinguished members of the
University community about how their faith shapes their study,
research, teaching, relationships, and service.
- The Writer’s Workshop offers free, live readings by world renowned fiction writers
and poets at various locations and via University radio station
WUI-AM 910.
- Natural History, Art, Medical, Historical, and Athletic Museums are available for your
enrichment and are also open to the public
- Hancher Auditorium and University Theatres host world-class entertainment, including
national and international professional artists, and performances by
the Departments of Theatre Arts, Music, and Dance.
- The University Libraries provide employees access to virtually unlimited print and
online information resources.
- The College of Education Curriculum Laboratory houses books, videos and textbooks for
children and young adults, as well as a large collection of resource
books for teachers and parents. Materials may be checked out for two
weeks with a University ID card.
- The College of Education features an Information Technology Center where all staff
members have access to an entire library of tutorial software.
- The Office of International Students and Scholars offers cross-cultural training
and programs, and awards a certificate in “Building our Global
Community.”
- International Programs hosts lectures, films, cultural programs, children’s programs,
and provides opportunities to interact with and/or host international
scholars.
- International Programs provides the Autonomous Language Learning Network (ALLNet) to learn or improve basic language skills (in languages not
otherwise taught on campus) in preparation for study and research
abroad. Upon admission into the program, learners are provided
materials and receive funding for tutorial sessions with a native
speaker.
