Every effort is made to maintain a positive and productive workplace in a
humane, healthy, and competent culture. Throughout the campus there are
numerous services to assist and support employees in the workplace and in
their personal lives and activities.
Health-related services
- liveWELL is the University's comprehensive wellness plan for eligible employees. Qualifying individuals complete an online Health Risk Assessment and receive an individualized report. Those with increased health risk status can access a UI Wellness health coach to develop a personalized health improvement plan. (*Dependent on employment classification)
- Free flu vaccinations are offered to employees each year at various locations
throughout campus.
- Lactation rooms are located throughout campus for the convenience of nursing
mothers.
- University Health Fairs provide an opportunity for faculty and staff to learn about
health and wellness, the University’s health care plans, UI Family Care
providers, and other health-related services. The health fairs are cosponsored
by the UI Wellness, University of Iowa Health Care, and
the Division of Recreational Services.
- UI Wellness provides health events, programs, and information to encourage a
healthy lifestyle, and assists employees in balancing their work and
personal lives.
- The UIHealthplans Office assists members of the UI
Health Insurance plans (UIChoice, CHIP, UIGRADCare,
and SHIP) with claim and benefit questions, claim problems, and
guidance to appropriate network providers.
- The University Employee Health Clinic (UEHC) provides employees a variety of services
including hearing, tuberculosis, mask fit, and pulmonary function
testing, workplace task and exposure evaluations, smoking cessation
support, immunizations, and general preventive health care. For
UIHC employees, the clinic also identifies work-related hazards and
monitors occupational safety and health.
- The Workers Health Clinic (WHC) coordinates care for UI employees with work-related
injuries.
- Three levels of dental care (student, resident, and faculty clinics) are available on
campus at graduated rates. The College of Dentistry’s convenient
“check-up clinic” (featuring online scheduling) is also available.
Employment conveniences
- The Employee Self-Service website provides all employees convenient and immediate
access to information about their personal benefits, paychecks,
taxes, spending accounts, time reporting, appointment records,
education and certifications history, U-bill, travel, Human Resources
Representative, and access to their authorized web applications.
Many adjustments, changes, and transactions can be completed
electronically through this single portal.
- ITS Remote Access Dial-up Service facilitates off-campus access to internet resources
for academic/work-related purposes. This service is also available to
campus residents who do not have a direct connection to the campus
network.
- Your University ID card can be used as a charge card at several locations throughout
the University, such as the Iowa Memorial Union and on-campus
dining rooms.
- Automatic teller machines are conveniently located throughout campus.
- University Libraries provide employees access to virtually unlimited print and online
information resources.
- Fleet Services offers rental vehicles for departmental business, from compact sedans
to 15-passenger vans. Fleet vehicles are also
available for purchase at annual auctions.
Assistance with resolving workplace, personal, and family issues
- Human Resource Representatives are available to every employee. These individuals
are knowledgeable about HR policies and procedures and can answer
questions and help resolve workplace issues. Staff members can
find their HR Rep listed on the HR Self Service website under the
Personal section.
- Organizational Effectiveness (OE) is a consulting service for supervisors seeking
assistance with work redesign, workplace communication,
conflict, strategic planning, leadership coaching, and performance
management to help maintain a positive and productive workplace.
- The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is available to staff and their family members
through Faculty and Staff Services for confidential, free, one-on-one
counseling regarding personal or family issues such as job stress, work
performance, depression, and substance abuse.
- Family Services helps with child care, school-age and elder care needs, identifies
on-campus lactation rooms, provides adoption resources, and offers
guidance on flexible work arrangements.
- Ergonomic Awareness Training for groups or individuals is provided by the
Health Protection Office. Consultants identify and reduce or
eliminate conditions in the workplace that can cause or aggravate
musculoskeletal disorders.
- Mediation Services provides assistance, when requested, in resolving or minimizing
workplace conflict.
- Faculty and Staff Disability Services (FSDS) advises individuals and departments
regarding health-related employment issues.
- Faculty and Staff Immigration Services assists with the regulatory issues of international employment.
- The Office of the Ombudsperson is a confidential, alternative resource, providing
information and assistance in informal workplace dispute resolution.
- Staff Council is an elected body representing approximately 5,000 non-bargaining
professional and scientific and merit supervisory exempt/ confidential
staff members. Council members promote communication
among staff, central administration, Faculty Senate, and Student
Government. This body makes significant contributions through the
shared governance of the University.
- FRIC , the Charter Committee on Funded Retirement and Insurance, includes appointed
Staff Council members who review and suggest changes to the
retirement and insurance benefits for non-bargaining employees.
- The Peer Support/Referral Program is available to individuals represented by Staff
Council to assist in understanding employee rights and procedures.
- The Women’s Resource and Action Center (WRAC) provides counseling, education,
programming and volunteer opportunities for UI students, staff,
faculty, and the community.
- The Rape Victim Advocacy Program (RVAP) provides free and confidential counseling
to victims/survivors of sexual violence and exploitation, and
educational programming to raise awareness about violence,
victimization, and abuse.
- The Dual Career Network assists spouses/partners of new permanent faculty and staff members in their job searches.
